Ever since I was a child, I have always played second fiddle to my sister who took center stage in all family issues. My sister was always a stellar student and swimmer in school. She was always regarded as a pace-setter having cut an edge over all her competitors by attaining the best results in her education and extracurricular activities. I always felt intimidated as my people would compare me with my sister. Even though she set herself as an example to many, I always found it extremely daunting and dubious to match her wide array of excellent skills. Having a feeling of always being overshadowed by my sister, I lacked the drive to excel in my studies.
However, my hapless situation took a quick turn once I was enrolled in high school and joined a journalism club where I was part of erudite members of the school’s magazine team. I thereafter began to hone my writing skills by penning different articles that cut across topics on self-esteem and health issues. Writing articles became my new hobby as I would easily tell my story and ideas in a different fearless platform which attracted significant number of fellow students. With the help of my teachers, I was recognized by my school faculty for my well written and informative articles. I then ventured into the career of being a peer educator to the children aid society. This was a tremendous progress that made me regain my confidence and encouraged me to achieve more.
In my pursuit to turn my weaknesses to strengths, I decided to join DVC Earth Club, Enactus and Habitat for Humanity clubs. I utilized this chance to develop my leadership qualities as I accepted to work as a Chief marketing officer in the DVC Earth Club. I became more confident and comfortable in public speaking. At Diablo Valley College, I took my grades more seriously and eventually garnered a first class honors in my degree. In essence, my sister remains to be a bright example for me as her determination and leadership qualities have been a motivation for me to continuously work on improving and enhancing my own expertise. I am currently more focused on building myself and not to please the people who had once compared my achievements to my sister’s. I strongly believe that people could shine, not only because of their accomplishments and results, but also because of their efforts that can never cease.
