Sample Review Paper on Responses
  • I linked the idea of interactivity from page 271 to the video. The book describes interactivity as “the extent to which a person is actually able to interact with the technology in a meaningful way”. People are linking to social media in a way that is meaningful to them, likt the hunger games girl for example. Marketers are selling our information and using it for research.

Response 1

It is true that interactivity is a means under which information technology is used by people. However as much as interactivity provides the medium of social interactions via social media, it is important to note that socio media interactions are designed in such as way that they able to suit any client wishing to use such platforms for interactions. Therefore, whatever one decides to use these platforms for might not be meaningful in terms of social ethics or character development. For example, there numerous case of abusive comments being posted in social media which in most case lead to social friction and division. Also, socio media provides appropriate platforms where information on available products or services can easily be obtained.

  • Well i’d like to connect The Carnegie Mellon Study which is according to Media Effects Research: A Basic Overview Chapter 11; a research team at Carnegie Mellon University that conducted a study led by Robert Kraut on the impact of internet uses. I thought this was perfect since, the basic idea of “likes” is due to internet and social media usage. The study involved 256 people in 93 different households over a period of 2 years monitoring their online and data usage. “Despite the fact the the researchers found that people in the study used the internet to engage in communication with others, they also found evidence of a rather alarming state of affairs” (Media Effects Research: A basic overview 3rd edition, page 222 chapter 11) One thing they found was an alarming decline in socialization within personal communication in the family. I’ve found this to be very true in my own home. When we are gathered, almost everyone has their hands on their cell phone. This does cause a communication decrease within my family members when we are all focused on our social media updates. In Generation like it talked about our dependence on social media “and likes” for popularity and socialization. Like I mentioned in my discussion board, i too am victim to social media for staying in touch with people and socializing frequently at the touch of a button. An app. The Activity Displacement Effect is when people have a limited amount of time during a day to engage in daily activities. Once the internet is in use, people tend to spend more time in isolation from others, using social media and other online links/apps for daily entertainment instead of socializing individually.

References 2

Usually, there are two major categories of effects of social media interaction. According to the reports of this study, communication is one of the positive effects while reduction in socialization within personal communication is a negative effect. Lack of effective management is a common characteristic to most users of social media sites because of the addictive nature involved with continuous use of social media for communication.

  • I think what is most relevant in the book to the documentary is the ideas of individual differences. On page 266 the social compensation hypothesis is summarized as the internet has a positive effect both social and for psychological well-being, but only for certain people. In the video we were introduced to a range of social media users. From the group of friends who casually use Facebook, to the Youtubers who made a career out of internet use. Tyler Oakley, who became famous from his Youtube videos, clearly benefited from his social connections and made lots of fans and possibly friends through this media channel that without he most likely would not have experienced the success he has. But on the other side of the theory, somebody who has a large social life in terms of face-to-face interactions may lose friendships from spending as much time online as Tyler Oakley. It is very important for researchers to take into consideration individual differences in research because obviously everyone is different, and their interactions with the internet and other new technologies are different.

Response 3

Good identification of two major two effects of social media interactions. it can help one identity a career as Taylor Oakley. Also, it is true that social media interactions largely contribute to lowered degree of face-to face interactions. Other negative effects include addiction thus misuse of time which would have been used for important roles, reduced morality and effects of peer pressure on character development.

  • One immediate connection I made between the chapter 11 reading and the video we watched was how rapidly media is changing and evolving. I think part of the reason so many people are so glued to media is the fact that it is always changing. Something new for people to become enveloped in is coming out every week. We don’t get the chance to get bored with our devices, leaving us glued to them all the time. It becomes a competition of who can be the most famous, or the most popular, in each media platform. Media is also used for people to connect with one another. Something that the video focused on and that was a conclusion met by the Carnegie Mellon Study in the reading. People form connections with others through the media. One question is though, whether or not the connection is real or superficial. A good example of this would be, nearly the whole second half of the video that really focused on people who have become popular on social media. In reference to how many followers they have gained, and how they feel that their fans can really connect with them and vice versa. One good thing to come out of media is it’s ability to connect someone with people like themselves, who share the same interests, who they may have never had the chance to meet before without media.
Response 4

The reason as to why people are so glued to social media is because socio media platforms demands once active participation or attention on order to achieve effective interactions. although new changes are ever happening in information technology including social media designs, it is important to note that this causes social media users to have different varieties for social interactions thereby causing them to use more time in social sites. I agree with your points on the video.
