Sample Essay on Analyzing MLK’s Speech

Introduction

In the summer of 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a campaigner for racial equality and justice, gave his most eloquent, inspiring, and famous speech, “I Have a Dream”. This was during the culmination of “The March on Washington” to agitate for equality, jobs, and equal voting rights for all citizens, especially people of color.

Dr. King on that day displayed various Talk Cards such as a preacher, a father, and a friend who wished to enjoy the fundamental rights that all Americans should enjoy. He used multiple cards to achieve synchrony among viewers and listeners to convey his message and achieve his goal. Dr. King could also have used others including that of a leader of the African- Americans and also a companion to those seeking equality and justice. I think it was a smart move by Dr. King to use multiple cards because by taking this approach he was able make the content of his speech robust and relevant to his listeners. However, if he had used other cards such as a rebellion card his message would have been conveyed in a hostile manner.

The style of Dr. King’s speech was low liking, medium formality and high power. In terms of liking, formality and power, Martin Luther King showed passion and commitment to change. The goal of Dr. King’s speech was to galvanize and encourage African-Americans to fight and gain freedom and justice in America through peaceful means. On the other hand, the goal of his audience was to be motivated and encouraged in their struggle of attaining freedom and justice throughout the country. Thus, Martin Luther King and the audience had the same goal.

The use of multiple Talk Cards by Dr. King helped him to convey his message and achieve his goal. Card play is always reciprocal and Dr. King used it by switching cards and roles to form unity and empathy among his listeners. Therefore, Martin Luther King was successful and effective in motivating Americans to fully embrace reforms and racial equality.
