Sample Critical Thinking Paper on Communications
Question one

The history of communication states how communication has evolved over the years. In the very early years, the forms of communication that existed were ambiguous because of the differences in practices among people from different background. This was also brought about by the lack of technology and backwardness in those days. As technology continued to advance, there were also several other forms of communication that started to come up. As a result, the world began to be closer to one another and thus meaning people from various places were able to understand one another. For instance, before the world war two, Britain had taken over several countries. As time went by, these countries were able to seek liberation from colonization of the British. This was further made possible by the victory of the United States in the Second World War, which also led to the downfall of Britain, which meant it lost most of the power that it had over these countries.

The modernization theory explains how modernization was integrated into the world. Modernization on its own is a term that defines the process through which the society transforms from a traditional way of living and doing things to a way that is more current. Modernization is responsible for most of the developments that the world enjoys in many sectors such as communication. This is because modernization helps in introducing new ways that are discovered to various parts of the world, and when this is done, it leads to more research which then means even more inventions.

Question two

Political economy can be defined as the study of how economic methods and theories have affected the political front.  According to the article by McChesney and Schiller, communication is the pillar upon which the development of the society whether socially or politically. Politically, communication can be sued in enhancement of democracy, or in denying it, and in some cases, both. Capitalists in the modern society have found that they are able to make much more profits from the integration of international communication. Global communication is important whether it involves the private sector or the government, or even when the two are working together. Global communication is therefore important in the promotion of various parts of the world economy, such as advertising.

Neoliberalism refers to a situation where the control of economic factors is shifted to the private sector from the public sector. Neoliberalism is said to bring in a sense of laissez- faire in by taking away restrictions and barriers to economic acts in order to foster faster development. Klein argues that the rise of liberalism has been made possible in the current world, especially among the developed countries, because of deliberate strategies put in place by certain politicians who have interests to look out for. These leaders, she says, take advantage of the occurrence of certain disasters to push for these neoliberal policies during these periods because citizens are too take into the disasters to protest or analyze these policies.

Question three

Globalization can be defined as the interconnection between nations in various parts of the world in several fronts such as in trade and technology. Usually when the topic of globalization is discussed, the advantages of it come out more than the disadvantages. Some of the advantages that have been previously mentioned include the ability of the third world or underdeveloped countries to catch up to the more advanced countries because they are able to access the resources that the latter have either invented or are enjoying.

There are however, several disadvantages that can be connected to globalization. Globalization has made competition a lot harder. This is because globalization has made easier trading between countries because it has led to the removal of previously existing barriers to cross-border trading. This therefore means that there is no single business that may enjoy better market as a result of existing in certain country more than the other. Making the world a somewhat level playing field for all businesses has made these businesses to have to struggle even more despite the fact that they are better placed in form of being in more available or easier market.

Globalization is also responsible for the increased levels of unemployment in various parts of the world. The reason for this is that it has turned the world into what is now referred to as a global village. This means that almost every corner of the world is accessible to almost everybody. This has led to a high rate of migration for job seeking purposes. It has also enhanced the advancement in technology which has seen human labor increasingly being replaced by computers and other machines.

Question four

Due to advancement in technology, the governments of certain nations such as the United States have been able to put in place systems that allow them to carry out surveillance on its citizens in various fronts. This, according to these governments, has made it easier for them to detect any activity that may be fishy. This is especially important in the current world where news and events of terrorism have become the order of the day. There have been arguments previously that this is an infringement on the privacy of the citizens who have their moves being monitored, their phone calls being tapped and their emails undergoing scrutiny.

The foreign policy of the United States was put in place to foster peaceful coexistence between nations of the world. Jensen is of the opinion that the US foreign policy is that it is wrongfully integrated. This is because, according to him, the characters and decisions of a person are often based on their individual characteristics such as attitude and background, rather than governed by a whole state as is the idea fostered by the foreign policy.

The NPR podcast has been an important tool especially because of its capability to reach a huge number of people at the same time. The media has always been seen as a vital tool that can either make or break a society. Therefore, the existence of the podcast enables the media to reach a large number of people with the correct and required information, thus helping in maintenance of peace as opposed to when people get different information from various sources, often lading to misinformation and confusion, which may sometimes fuel conflict.

Question five

The film ‘control room’ is only one sided. This is because it has already decided that the east is the enemy, therefore the biasness does not show that the people of the east are also often suffering as a result of these attacks. For instance, in Afghanistan, there are stories of the American soldiers holding hostage families. In such wars, people are always only concentrated on the victory of the soldiers, and nobody pays attention to those who are innocent and are residing in those countries.

The United States may have actually became paranoid after the 9/11 attack. This ahs both advantages and disadvantages to the people in the country. One of the advantages is that the country has become extra careful in its surveillance, thus making it difficult for terrorists to accomplish an attack similar to 9/11. The downside is that the rights of various groups of people have been infringed in the country’s efforts to prevent future attacks.

Question six

Globalization is a very wide topic. As a result, it is bound to have advantages as well as disadvantages. For instance, globalization can be credited for the ease in trade around the world. The advancement in technology has also made it easier for other activities such as marketing and trade. This is because these can now take place across borders, often without the concerned parties even ever having to face one another physically. However, globalization is also responsible for other perils such as the ease in spread of propaganda by the media. There are several forms of media that are accessible in almost all parts of the world. This makes it difficult for the concerned bodies to have any control of the information that is disseminated through them.

Foreign policy has brought a connection between culture and politics in the sense that there are certain individuals or cultures that are seen to be a threat to others. For instance, most of the terrorist attacks around the world have been perpetrated by Islam extremists. Unfortunately, to most people there exists a very slight, if any, difference between Islam extremists and Islamic faithful. This has led to the alienation of Muslims, this often leading to them being on a different political side from the rest.
