The gender and the sex culture in Japan has changed immensely as a result of the influence of the western media. Alexander Hambleton’s article best exemplifies this by stating that the women’s social roles have gone through transformations. The image of the good wife and the wise mother have been replaced by those of career women, who work and play for the purpose of their pleasure. It is widely observed that women are now putting more effort on work rather than their families; the effects of this change can be observed in the country’s low birth rate of around 1.3. The average age of marriage in Japan has changed from 24 years to 28 years, and the country’s fertility has declined significantly. The image of the kind wife and mother figure has remained ubiquitous in the TV dramas and magazines, for example, “Anan.” The figure of the financially independent woman has taken precedence in Japan’s landscape, with the western acculturation of independent women being glorified in the country.

The Japanese women have emulated the westernized body ideals that are represented by tall, thin physiques and light colored hair. This tendency towards acculturation has also been exhibited by the media, for example magazines that feature models who are similar to those in western culture. Exposure to western models has resulted in a rejection of the stereotypical Asian facial features; many Japanese women are now turning to surgical enhancements and use of elements, for example tanning, to enhance how they look. The Japanese hair color has changed to become more westernized. The young women in Japan have been frequently described as powerful consumers; it is the young women who are now having the highest disposable income as opposed to the traditional scene, where income was more related with age. These women have often been described as commanding high levels of expendable income. The fact that these women are described as consumers has enabled the women to significantly contribute to the major changes in the society

The stereotypical gender constructions have been implicated in the process of the western influence, many western nations have continuously justified the imperialist aggression by defining their status as that of the liberator, of the non-western women from the severe oppression by their men, and Japan has not been left out on this rhetoric. The media in Japan has allowed the women to feel more empowered and express their sexuality freely; the female sexuality has been has been presented in the media through the prism of the masculine normative sexual expectations.

The nature and social role of Japanese women are conceptualized in relation to norms, created by the Western Media. In Japan women are immensely vulnerable to the controlled messages that emanate from the media. Due to the communication technology that is widespread in the  country, many women may wear cute technological artifacts to project themselves as appealing objects so that they can comply with the men’s wishes and desires. The gender relationships and the concepts of sexuality have existed in the discourse of the gender artifacts and the mediated concepts of sexuality that are prevalent in this westernized material culture.

Conscious of being promoted to the position of becoming the ideal gaze for the males, Many Japanese women have been forced to look for the latest information concerning fashion and goods from different media. Japanese women, who rarely talk to each other, achieve collective  experiences by  using the media. The media assist them to have social harmony; the statement in the media has motivated the value of the common sense knowledge and phrases.

In conclusion, the western media has greatly influenced the Japanese women by changing the traditional perceptions of sexuality and gender roles. Today, the Japanese woman is more motivated to pursue an ideal image that promotes the male gaze and at the same time satisfies the western perception of an ideal woman. The western media has served the role of the liberator in freeing Japanese women from the patriarchal ideology, where they were expected to be good wives and mothers. The media has empowered the women, and they have actively used their sexual identities to gain social power.
