Background

            Organizational learning is an emerging trend necessitated by a shift in the labor market trends and organizational management approaches, leadership styles and practices. The position of human capital in organizational success has gradually shifted putting them as the center of success. They not only plan on how to acquire and utilize resources for growth and development, they make sure actions are sustainable. Organizational learning therefore seeks to empower employees through creating and sharing of information. Such information must be easily accessible. This is achieved from adoption of information technology. Essentially organizational learning “comprises of cognitive (intellectual), affective (emotional), and psychomotor (physical) domains” (Masaxcas 2011, 36). It is recognition of the complex interdependencies in the 21st century business environment and appreciating them with a view of encouraging creativity and innovation and ultimately gaining competitive advantage in the labor and commodity markets (Kerman, Freundlich, Lee and Brenner 2012, 235-6).

            However, there are differences in the conventional models used by different companies which are shaped by numerous factors including the cultural practices in the various geopolitical regions. If not effectively addressed, such differences might lead to ethical and general operation conflicts especially for cross-cultural business operations including multinationals. This project will seek to provide pertinent information on the dominant organizational learning models and approaches used in my region to foreign companies interested in operating in my country.

Objectives
  • To identify the organizational learning modules and approaches used by local companies
  • To identify the organizational modules and approaches used by the foreign firms under focus
  • To identify the possible barriers to organizational learning that the foreign companies might face
  • To identify effective approaches and modules that can be used by foreign companies in implementing organizational learning plan in the local environment
Scope

            The project which will be carried out in three phases will focus on key areas such as general characteristics of a learning organization. This will then be narrowed down to the various modules used in the local and foreign business environments. Specifically, it will highlight how organizational knowledge is created and shared in the two environments as well as the social contexts and processes of organizational learning in both environments. Towards this end, the project will focus on the various networks and strategic alliances used by organizations in such environments in promoting organizational learning. The project will then discuss the barriers the foreign companies are likely to face in the local environment with regards to implementing their modules. Finally, it will provide recommendations on possible effective approaches they can use.

Key Stakeholders

The main stakeholders in this project will be the foreign companies who are planning to open offices in the local business environment. Therefore, they will be the main project client and sponsor. Local companies and local government are also stakeholders in the project. Local authorities stand to gain with foreign investment in the area especially through taxes and creation of employment while local companies will gain from knowledge on organizational learning modules and insight into other modules applied abroad in case they need to expand. I will be the project manager in liaison with the local authorities and foreign companies.

Monitoring and Evaluation


            The success of the project will be monitored and evaluated using a benefit cost analysis approach. Reduction in the number of barriers and effective implementation of organizational learning module by the foreign companies measured by reduced organizational conflicts will be the key indicators of success.
