King Cotton Article Review

Identify at least 3 things that surprised you in this article about slavery

Slave trade was started, not as a form of oppression due to the color of the Africans but because of the cotton farming. More slaves were needed to work on the cotton farms.

Eli Whitney made a device that helped separate the cottonseed from lint which was used to weave clothes. This made it easier for laborers to make more clothes in a day than they used to. However, this device, made by Whitney brought about labor shortage and more slaves were therefore needed in the cotton farms (Dattel, 2014)

The American civil was caused, not by slavery as many think but the cotton which was produced by the slaves.

How did the author describe the role of cotton in the evolution of the slave system?

Cotton played a great role in the evolution of slave system. Slave trade was dependent on cotton farming in the 19th century (Dattel, 2014). If prices of cotton reduced, the value of slaves also reduced. This meant that if there was no cotton farming, slaves would not have been needed.

Cotton led to the racial issue in America as most black people were enslaved to work on the cotton farms. Blacks were not enslaved because of the social class or for any political gain. If cotton farms did not exist, the slave trade would have altogether been abolished.

How did race and class impact the slave system and its evolution?

The Americans saw blacks as poor people who had no morals or religion. The northern America passed laws, which were meant to prevent the blacks from serving on the jury, be in the military or intermarry with the whites. While they needed them to work on their cotton farms, they did not want anything to do with them socially.

Since the nation needed blacks for the economic and industrial growth, they had to assimilate them to be like them. The black children were, therefore, taught the practical things, which included sewing for girls and agriculture for boys (Dattel, 2014).

Since the blacks realized that cotton farming was their best weapon to free them, they started demanding for their rights as American citizens.

Dattel, G. (2014). king cotton.
