Reflection Paper on Transgender Men and the Persistence of Gender Inequality
Reading Reflection Paper Prompt Schilt, Kristen. 2010. Just One of the Guys? Transgender Men and the Persistence
of Gender Inequality. Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago Press.
Paper Due:
Tuesday, October 23rd
You should submit an electronic copy through the “assignments” tab on our course
website. Please, also, bring a hard copy to class to turn in.
Essay Guideline:
Reflecting on the book Just One of the Guys? by Kristen Schilt, write an essay that
addresses the following questions:
• These questions should be addressed at the beginning of your paper: What is
the author’s main point? How does the author make this point? Think about the
following: What type of evidence does Schilt use to back up her argument?
• The bulk of your paper should address these questions: Schilt argues that
gender inequality is both maintained and reproduced by natural difference
schemas. What is a natural difference schema and how is it both institutionally
embedded and reproduced in social interactions? Schilt crafts a strong
intersectional argument. Explain this argument by specifying how race and class
shape transmens’ experiences in the workplace. Compare and contrast the
experiences of stealth and open transmen in the workplace. What does Schilt’s
work tell us about the eradication or persistence of workplace gender inequality?
Finally, you should provide your own critique of Schilt’s argument. Is her
argument convincing? Explain- Why? Why not?
Essays should consist mostly of a thoughtful, critical engagement with the book. Brief
summaries are useful, but should be kept to a minimum. The majority of your essay
should contain an analysis of the author’s argument and data. Your critique (remember
that critiques are not necessarily negative) should be grounded in the book and other
course material and should not be based on anecdotal evidence that you bring to the
reading. In other words, arguments such as “I know a transman who… which shows that
Schilt is incorrect” are not appropriate for this paper. Critiques may include any of the
following: Questions you think the author should have addressed, pointing out any
contradictions between the author’s argument and those in other readings for the course,
arguing against the author by questioning the evidence and logic of the argument, and/or
pointing out the strengths of the argument.
Essays should be written in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins, and should be 3-5 pages
double-spaced. Please read your paper carefully before you turn it in. Writing and overall
organization will be taken into account while grading.
Furthermore, your paper should NOT contain any quotes from the book. Since this is a
short paper, I want to hear your own words! Therefore, you should paraphrase instead of
use direct quotes. Points will be docked if quotes are used.
Finally, of course, plagiarism will not be tolerated!
