Sample Coursework Paper on Developing and Strengthening Local Food Systems

Food systems are edifying mechanisms applied by relevant agencies to meet basic human nutritional needs. For a food system to be effective, it must be capable of avoiding long-term exhaustion of the natural resources, and distribute equitably vital nutrients to people. However, population growth has the possibility of surpassing the pace of food production; hence, people are likely to experience hunger in the end. The USDA’s Economic Research has discovered that local food systems have become fundamental in creation of more than one million jobs for the Americans. One of the programs that USDA undertakes is food and nutrition. The USDA has endeavored to assist families that are incapable of providing enough food by providing nutritional food supply to them.

The program “Let’s Move,” which was initiated by First lady Michelle Obama with an aim of raising healthy kids, has been helpful to more than 32 million children who benefit from school lunch every day. The USDA has been persuading schools to promote healthy eating, as well as exercise, through Healthier US School Challenge Program where schools are awarded for improving school meals and checking nutrition. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has also been utilized to ensure that hardworking families have access to healthy food to supplement their nutrition as they regain their strength. These programs have helped farmers to enlarge their market locally while the US citizens benefit from healthy foods. According to Bodley, malnutrition is common in both developed and developing countries, where food security has been an issue (162). Vulnerable groups, such as children, elderly, and urban poor, are the most affected by malnutrition and USDA programs can assist in fighting the problem.

Malthusian dilemma involves the problem of trying to maintain subsistent food security through balancing population level on one side and the price of food production on the opposite side. The cultural progress has endeavored to avoid hunger through maintaining the minimum level of food intake while minimizing the pressure of controlling population. Malthus had projected that an exponentially growing population could exceed a linearly expanding food production, thus, causing hunger (Bodley 149).

While undertaking their research on hunger in Bangladesh, Hartman and Boyles discovered that hunger was neither natural nor unavoidable, but its causes were deeply rooted to the cultural system (Bodley 172). During the famines in 1943 and 1974, people died due to lack of adequate privilege to food, rather than food scarcity. The surplus food that is cultivated by peasants is wasted while much of the land and labor are not adequately utilized. Financial resources in the country are distributed unequally, despite the country being the major producer of rice, potatoes, onions, and tea. According to Feed the Future, a US Government initiative, Bangladesh has been experiencing an average of 6% GDP growth since 2000, yet 405 of the population is undernourished (Bangladesh Fact Sheet).

Population growth and depletion of natural resources have contributed to food insecurity in Bangladesh.  Gender-related issues have also been blamed for food insecurity, where women are largely involved in agriculture, but they lack access to extension services that could increase food production.  Due to their responsibilities, women are always the last to take the meal. Although poor distribution of power has been termed as the main cause of malnutrition, limits to food production in specific areas has largely contributed to malnutrition. Thus, Feed the Future is proposing for policy reforms by the Bangladesh government to enhance food security and improving nutrition status in the rural areas.
