Introduction

It is arguable that effective communication is very essential in management. Communication is essential because it helps managers share information with the junior employees, in order to ensure a smooth running of the organization (Kataria & Garg, 2013). For example, previous studies show that managers spend approximately 75 percent of their time, on daily basis communicating different instructions, to the junior employees. However, in spite of this fact, it is evident that an organization’s management is equally important, just like communication, because most functions revolve around it. For example, the human resource management ensures that the organization has adequate staff, for smooth operations.  Further, the HR focuses on training and development of staff, in order to equip them with adequate skills, thus enhancing their competence.  Moreover, the HR offers competitive compensation packages to the employees in, order to motivate them, thus enhancing productivity.

On the other hand, unlike HR, the marketing department seeks to enhance the sales of a firm through carrying out a number of extensive marketing activities. Thus, based on this definition, it is evident that corporate sustainability seeks to enhance present and future life conditions for everyone.  However, in so doing, corporate sustainability employs innovative and eco-efficient solutions, as opposed to traditional ones.

For example, Ugoriji and Oruh (2013), hold that effective internal communication is vital since it motivates all the employees, hence enhancing efficiency. Effective communication motivates employees, as it makes them feel part of the organization.  However, in order to maintain effective internal communication, Ugoriji and Oruh suggest that the management should adopt the following measures. For instance, the management should ensure that it holds regular meetings with the employees, at least once in a week. Further, the management should ensure that the junior employees have representatives in charge of presenting their grievances.

Similarly, Singh (2013), holds that effective internal communication is vital since builds employees trust towards the management. For example, by regularly communicating to the employees about the firm’s, progress they start developing some trust towards the management, hence commitment to work, which results to enhanced productivity. Further, Singh (2013) holds that effective internal communication is significant because it encourages employees to dispense good news about a company. Effective internal communication makes the employees spread good news about a firm, as it makes them feel part of the organization. Significance of Corporate Sustainability

Just like communication, corporate sustainability is of great importance to an organization. Corporate sustainability is vital because it makes the societal members feel part an organization (Beheiry, Wai Kiong & Haas, 2006). For example, when a firm sponsors the supply of water to a community, as part of corporate sustainability, it will reap many benefits. First, this initiative will make community members feel that the organization cares about their welfare. Another case study of an organization that incorporates effective internal communication in its operations is the one by Coca Cola Company. In so doing, the firm ensures that it incorporates all the employees in various processes. Further, the firm ensures that it communicates all the issues to its employees (Hernandez & Grayson, 2012). In this regard, the communication structure is both top down and down top. For example, when the management plans to initiate anything it will communicate downwards to the employees. On the other hand, employees will communicate upwards giving the management feedback concerning what they think is best. Further, through the down top communication structure, employees are able to raise their grievances to the management for action.  Consequently, because of effective internal communication, the firm’s employees always express satisfaction in their jobs. Further, because of effective internal communication employees exhibit the highest degree of trust towards the firm, as well as, efficiency in their operation. Consequently, because of enhanced efficiency, the firm has been able to increase its productivity, as well as, profitability.

Therefore, the cases studies of Unilever, Coca Cola, and Barclays bank are very applicable in explaining the relationship between effective internal communication and corporate sustainability. For example, the three case studies depicted that internal communication and corporate sustainability relate in the sense that they both enhance job satisfaction (Baumann et al, 2013). Further, the three studies depicted that effective internal communication and corporate sustainability relate to one another because they both enhance trust towards the organization. In addition, the three studies demonstrated that effective internal communication and corporate sustainability relate since they both enhance productivity in the firm, as well as, profitability.

Theories Relevant to the Topic

Various theories applicable in explaining the relationship between effective communication, and corporate sustainability exist. One of the theories is excellence theory.  In this regard, the theory incorporates various middle range theories. Further, according to the theory engaging in social responsibility is essential because it helps enhance a brand image (Ugoriji & Oruh, 2013). Therefore, through maintenance of quality relations and enhancement in brand image, a firm is able to increase its productivity, hence sales. On the other hand, enhancement in trust of the employees towards the firm is essential because it will help increase efficiency, as well as, employee job satisfaction.

Despite the above sentiments, excellence theory has a number of arguments.  For example, the theory argues that for a firm to be effective, it must conduct itself in a manner that seeks to address various problems.
