Ideal Parenting

Parenting refers to a process by which a new born is nurtured from birth till maturity. Parents are responsible for providing financial, emotional and material needs of a child from birth till adulthood. Parenting is a responsibility that is enjoyed by several members of the society. This is due to the fact that parenting is a responsibility of not just the biological parents. There are parents who adopt children and raise them as their own since they are unable to bear children.

Usually, this is what happens in some heterosexual families where one parent is unable to bear children and homosexual marriages. Surrogate parents and foster parents enjoy parenting as well. Guardians can take this responsibility as well when the biological parents of a child are dead. Regardless of the situations, parenting entails extensive skills that make it effective. Nevertheless, there are areas where most parents fail during parenting. However, ideal parents know how to balance discipline and love in order to make their children grow into healthy and responsible adults (Pieper & Pieper, 2005).

Ideal parenting entails fulfilling every role of ideal parents. The expectations of the society are that ideal parents will cater for the emotional, financial and physical needs of their kids. Children are cushioned against the world’s cruelty by the parents. Parents are also held responsible for the actions of their children in the society. Additionally, ideal parents protect their children against harm while they develop. An ideal parent can be described as a provider. Ideal parents provide for their children’s material needs. These include the basic necessities like shelter, education, food and clothing. An ideal parent also ensures comfort for the children in relation to luxuries that include entertainment. This ability relies on the financial status of the parent but ideal parents make sure that their children have basic needs within their financial abilities.

There is a strong bond in the relationship of ideal parents and their children. This bond is the first attachment that children know. Their relationships are most likely built on the basis of this relationship in the future. Ideal parents comprehend this while ensuring that their children establish great attachment styles during childhood. Additionally, ideal parents provide for health and emotional needs of their kids. They love and discipline their children equally. This ensures that the children become responsible adults (brooks, 2012).

For these roles to be fulfilled, ideal parents should have certain ideal characteristics. An example of such characteristics that ideal parents should have are great temperamental qualities. The personal qualities of an ideal parent should also be desirable and they include high self-esteem.

The parents are also physically and psychologically fit and their inter-relationship skills are great. They also have good problem solving abilities which enhance their parenting efficiency. Only values that a parent has can be imparted into the children. Usually, learning in children takes place through imitation. Therefore, it is important that a parent maintains great moral values. Such values include honesty, transparency and integrity (Brooks, 2012).

A parent’s job advertisement is a description of an ideal parenting situation. It indicates that full commitment is required in parenting because it is a lifetime and full time job. Parents do not have even a single day off or holiday. Parents are responsible for their children from the moment they are born until maturity. There are also no financial benefits for the job and there is no retirement for this job. A parent does not also have a chance to choose children before he/she takes them up. The implication of this description is that parenting as a process is difficult. This is due to the fact that no person can apply for this kind of a job since it tax without paying. Nevertheless, I do not agree because parenting pays in terms of satisfaction as well as the joy that comes with it. The desire for people without children is to be parents. Thus, parenting as a responsibility is clearly a blessing for those with children. To an ideal parent, their task is not a burden. It is the most joyous responsibility (Valenti, 2012).

Ideal situations differ from the real situations. In parenting, this is the case. As human beings, parents impart all their characteristics into their children and this goes on down the generation. Parents are not perfect due to their individual strengths and weaknesses. As such, they pass both negative and positive attributes to children. The implication of this is that every parent has his/her style of raising children. My experience as a parent has taught me that I should avoid pointing fingers at parents when they fail to meet the definition of an ideal parent. This is due to the fact that there are times when I also do not meet this definition.

The ability of a parent to perform his/her parenting roles is affected by various factors. Parenting is not simple. Extreme input of both parents is required in regards to time, finances and care. There are parents who do not have some of such resources. There are parents who engage in part time and full time jobs. They sacrifice their time so that they can invest it in their kids. Usually, such parents are financially able and therefore they can hire parenting help. As such, their children learn from hired helpers instead of learning from their parents. This affects the adults that such children become. There are parents who are unable to provide essential resources to their children due to financial inability. For instance, children of such parents may not get good education because their parents cannot afford fees. Such parents cannot be described as ideal parents who provide all needs to ensure their children’s consistency. Nevertheless, this should not be taken to imply that such parents do not love their children (Valenti, 2012).

The personal and emotional character of a person can also make meeting the description of an ideal parent difficult. There are parents who cannot form stable relationships. This impact on the development of the attachment styles of their children. There are also parents who are unstable psychologically and therefore they cannot provide stable emotional establishment for the children. Additionally, the temperament of a person can hinder them from becoming an ideal parent because they might overindulge in their child. It can also make a parent punish the kid harshly whenever the child makes a minor mistake. Bringing up children is a responsibility that can be overwhelming for some parents because of personal traits. An example of this is a parent whose self-esteem is low who cannot assist his/her child to become a more confident adult (Pieper & Pieper, 2005).

If I was given a chance to give a parenting license, I would avoid including all ideal parent’s characteristics. Instead, I would set the ability to provide all essential needs to a child as the basic requirement for a potential parent. Such needs include food, clothing, shelter, emotional stability and education. As such, I would prevent abusive parents from giving birth unless they seek assistance first. Additionally, I would ensure that potential parents have the ability to provide vital financial needs to a child prior thinking of having one (Carter, 2011).
