Mexico offers a reward of $3.8m for the recapture of the drug kingpin ‘El Chapo’

Mexico is giving a 60 million pesos or $3.8m for the most-wanted drug kingpin Joaquin El Chapo Guzman’s recapture. This reward will be given to anybody who gives information that will lead authorities to his location and eventual capture.

In the meantime, maximum-security prison director and other senior officials have already been fired. According to Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, the Interior Minister in Mexico, the officials of the prison must have assisted Joaquin in his escape- (follow the link for more information).

The recent Guzman’s photograph was released while making the announcement for the reward. In the image, the chief of Sinaloa cartel’s face is shown and a shaved head. The image does not show him with a trademark mustache that he had when captured by the authorities last year.

Osorio Chong urged the citizens to assist the government in his recapture by giving the authorities anonymous tips. He said that the video footage of the prison cell where Guzman was held will be released.

The drug kingpin has escaped from the prison before and he has spent over a decade in prison- (follow the link for more information).  This time, he escaped on Saturday night through a tunnel that was near the cell where he was being held. He stepped into the shower and crawled via a hole before walking underground for almost a mile in the tunnel that apparently was constructed for him. His escape triggered a massive manhunt on Sunday.

The president of Mexico and the U.S officials are livid. If Guzman is caught, this time he may be imprisoned in the United States. The United States has already pledged to help the government of Mexico bring him to justice- (follow the link for more information)

According to the White House, Loretta Lynch, the Attorney General of the U.S spoke with the Attorney General of Mexico on Sunday, a day after the escape of Guzman from prison. The spokesman of the White House, Josh Earnest said that the government of the U.S is offering Mexico full support. He added that Guzman is also facing serious crime charges in the United States.

His escape

Guzman managed to escape from prison in 2011 by using a laundry cart to sneak out. The authorities spent 13 years searching for him because he spent most of his time in a beach resort in Mexico. During his recent escape from the Altiplano prison, the authorities believe that Guzman took a sophisticated route. He escaped through a tunnel that has complete lighting and ventilation. There was also a modified motorcycle that may have been used to facilitate his escape.

According to Monte Alejandro Rubido, the National Security Commissioner in Mexico, the tunnel that began with a measurement of 50-by-50 centimeter had an opening that led to the Guzman’s cell shower. The opening connected to the vertical passageway whose length was over 10 meters. The passageway had a ladder leading to the tunnel of about 1.7 meters long and over 70 centimeters wide- (follow the link for more information).

Guzman is so powerful that he was listed among Warren Buffet and Bill Gates in 2009 as one of “self-made” billionaires. At that time, his fortune was estimated to be approximately $1 billion.
